Atenolol is a cardio selective adrenoceptor blocking agent without partial agonist (sympathomimetic) or membrane stabilizing activity.

COMPOSITION: Each tablet contains: Atenolol BP 25 mg. Each tablet contains: Atenolol BP 50 mg. Each tablet contains: Atenolol BP 100 mg.

PHARMACOLOGY & MODE OF ACTION: Atenolol is an effective and well tolerated beta-blocking agent with some specific properties which can also be utilized to benefit certain patients. For example, patients with asthma or diabetes who require therapy with a beta-blocker. Atenolol is effective in a single daily dosage regimen as compared to other beta-blockers which require frequent daily dose. Atenolol is useful for the treatment of hypertension. It reduces both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. As with Other beta-blockers the reduction in blood pressure with Atenolol is consistently accompanied by a reduction in heart rate and cardiac output. Resting myocardial oxygen consumption is also reduced in patients with coronary artery disease. Patients with bronchial asthma and diabetes mellitus are expected to be benefited from relatively high cardio selectivity of Atenolol. Atenolol is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is widely distributed in the body. However, only a small proportion reaches the brain. Most of the absorbed portion of Atenolol is excreted in the urine unchanged. Atenolol diffuses across the placenta and is excreted in breast milk.

INDICATIONS: Atenolol is indicated for the management of following diseases: Hypertension, Angina pectoris, Hyperthyroidism, Atenolol has also been used with success after an attack of myocardial infarction.

PRECAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS: In patients with impaired renal function dosage should be individualized on the basis of renal function tests. 50mg Atenolol per day is recommended, if the glomerular filtration rate is between 10 and 30 ml per minute (or serum creatinine is between 2.5 and 5 mg per 100 ml on at least two occasions). 50 mg Atenolol is recommended on alternate days when the glomerular filtration rate is less than 10 ml per minute (or serum creatine is greater than 5 mg per 100 ml on at least two occasions). Although Atenolol is a cardio selective beta blocker as with other drugs of this type, it should be used with caution in patients with respiratory diseases. Atenolol should be used in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

SIDE EFFECTS: Atenolol has been well tolerated by most patients. Its overall side effects are less than the non-cardio selective beta-blocking agents. The common side effects are cold extremities, fatigue and diarrhea. Vivid dreams or insomnia have occasionally occurred. Despite Atenolol's relatively high cardioselectivity, bronchospasm has been reported in some patients and as with other cardio selective betablockers appropriate precautions are necessary in at risk patients.
